The Steak Dinner Fundraiser held on May 22nd was a huge success. A check in the amount of $5,400 was presented on June 6th to Tracy and Billy Robinson to help with Cory’s medical expenses. An additional $210 has since been collected and will be presented to the family at a later date.
Many, many thanks to everyone who helped with this annual fundraiser that benefits someone in the community.
Who is Cory Longest?
Cory is a 13 year old boy who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the tender age of two. Cory is both mentally and physically challenged. He isn’t capable of walking and talking, but he loves to give “high-fives.” Cory is always laughing and can put a smile on your face with his bright smile. He enjoys listening to music, splashing in the pool, and playing challenger baseball. But most importantly, Cory is a very appreciative child. Cory’s family feels he is a true blessing from God and is a child who has made his whole family stronger and better people.
Cory’s older sister says, “We could all learn a little something from him. I know our family sure has.”
What is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral palsy is a group of problems that affects body movements and posture. It is related to a brain injury or to problems with brain growth. It is one of the most common causes of lasting disability in children. Cerebral palsy causes reflex movements that a person can’t control and muscle tightness that may affect parts or all of the body. These problems can range from mild to severe. Mental retardation, seizures, and vision and hearing problems can occur.
Can Cerebral Palsy be treated?
Cerebral palsy can’t be cured, meaning Cory will need lifelong treatment. But treatments can help deal with Cory’s symptoms, prevent problems, and make the most of his abilities. Physical therapy is one of the most important treatments. Medicines, surgery, and special equipment such as a walker or a special wheelchair can also help.
Cory is constantly going back and forth to various doctor’s appointments for checkups and treatments. As you can imagine, Cory’s medical bills and treatments are enormous, even with insurance. That is why we at Salem are excited about helping Cory, who is not only a courageous young man but is also the grandchild of church members Charles and Linda Kirby. Cory is not only God’s child, but “one of our own!”
Cory’s family thanks you for your support and prayers.
